Sewing Skill Levels

Here are a list of skill sets needed for each sewing level: Absolute Beginner:
  • Thread your machine
  • Sew a seam
  • Create an elastic casing
  • Make a hem
  • Hand sew a button
  • Topstitching / Edgestitching
  • Seam pressing
Confident Beginner:
  • Ease in a sleeve
  • Sew with knits
  • Finish seam edges with a zigzag or by serging
  • Sew machine button holes
  • Basic hand sewing skills such as slipstitching
  • Applying store bought bias tape
  • Sew a lining
Intermediate:
  • Sew a convex curve to a concave curve (such as princess seams)
  • Apply twill or seam tape
  • Sew an exposed zipper
  • Sew an invisible zipper
  • Creating your own piping or bias tape
  • Understitching
Intermediate Plus:
  • Create pintucks
  • Bag a closed lining
  • Sew a zippered / button fly
Advanced:
  • Hand smocking
  • Sew a bound button hole
  • Sew a welt pocket
