For The Love of Legends: Mermaid Wishes + BONUS Free Silhouette Cut File

When I saw that CraftingCon & Phat Quarters were hosting a blog tour with the theme of legends, I quickly signed up. We are a little obsessed with mythical creatures. My oldest daughter’s room is decorated with mermaids, so it was only fitting that she get a mermaid themed dress to match.

Now, I’ll be honest. I originally had in my head to do something super elaborate and costume like. But, then I quickly came to my senses and realized that for something as awesome as a mermaid, I would want my daughter to be able to wear it 24/7. So I switched gears and self drafted a new dress. I’ve been hoarding this beautiful fabric from Michael Miller’s Out to Sea line by Sarah Jane, and this project was the perfect time to use it!

One of my favorite things about a blog tour is it gives me the chance to take off my designer hat for a little bit and exercise a different creative muscle. My original plan was to mash a couple patterns together, but one thing led to another and I ended up drafting a whole new design. Old habits die hard I guess. But the really exciting thing is that I got to use my Silhouette Cameo.

Make your own mermaid inspired dress using heart transfer vinyl with this free download for the Silhouette vinyl cutter - This dress turned out so cute! Must repin for later!!

If you are not familiar with a Silhouette Cameo cutting machine, I have to apologize for the hit your wallet is about to take. Because when you find out all the things this machine can do, you are going to want one. As a matter of fact, I designed my youngest daughter’s room decor projects around it just so I would have a good excuse for my husband to buy the machine (Sorry, hubby!). They are so much fun!  I’m pretty sure these cutting machines were originally marketed for scrapbooking, a pastime that I always think I want to do in my head but never actually have time for. The newest machines can cut all types of vinyl and do amazing things like embossing and etching in addition to cutting paper.  Honestly, the possibilities are endless.

I sadly don’t get to use my machine as much as I’d like. I recently got a bunch of heat transfer vinyl on a good deal on Amazon and decided to put it to good use for this project. My favorite thing about the Silhouette is that you can trace almost anything and it will cut it perfectly. Gone are the days when you need to buy a million expensive cartridges that have designs that you have to settle for because they are the only things close enough to what you wanted. With the Silhouette, you can find (or in my case make) a jpeg and tell the software to trace it and cut. Easy peasy.

bella-sunshine-designs-mermaid-silhouette-cameo copy

I created a cute mermaid-inspired design on the computer and then cut it out with the Silhouette. Once the design was cut out and the excess vinyl was weeded, I just placed it on my bodice piece and ironed it on. I did this in a couple different steps so I could get the layout exactly how I wanted it. The finished bodice was so adorable, it made the sewing aspect a little nerve wracking. You know that moment that things are going so perfectly that you are terrified that you will mess it up in the final hour? Yes, that was totally me. But thankfully luck was only side, and the final product turned out amazing.  Check out the photos of my mini me below:

Cute right? The heat transfer is prominent on the bodice, and the the flutter sleeves really compliment the print on the skirt. Plus, because I couldn’t help myself, I added a little lace trim to the flutter sleeves. Every dress needs a little lace, don’t you think? I am so in love with this dress that you will probably see the pattern in the shop soon. It’s just too cute.Make your own mermaid inspired dress using heart transfer vinyl with this free download for the Silhouette vinyl cutter - This dress turned out so cute! Must repin for later!!

Now you know I couldn’t show you this fabulous mermaid themed dress without sharing a little love, right? That’s why I decided to offer my Silhouette fans a little something. Click here to download your FREE silhouette cut files I created for this dress.

New Releases, Winter Coats, & Beautiful Dresses – Birthday Blog Tour – Day 5

It’s Friday!  You know what that means?!?!  It’s release day here at BSD!  In addition to 3 more fabulous pattern hacks, we’ve got two great pattern releases for you today!  No matter if you are in love with woven fabrics or knits, we’ve got something for everyone.

The Maci Twirly Dress & Top – Girls PDF Sewing Pattern

You are going to love the Maci Twirly Dress & Top.  It comes with both long and short sleeves as well as three different length options.  It is designed for knit fabrics for all you custom knit addicts out there. This has quickly become my daughter’s favorite play dress.  And it’s such a quick sew, I don’t mind that she goes out and gets dirty in it.  She’s begging me to make her more. Check out the photos below:

The Piper Reversible Peplum Top – Girls PDF Sewing Pattern

I love the look of a peplum top. It accentuates the waist and gives such a feminine look to the figure.  I wanted this top to be super beginner friendly.  Because of that, there are no zippers or button holes to sew. The back keyhole is both decorative and functional allowing the top to slip easily over the head. And since there is a button loop to close, you don’t have to worry about your machine button hole giving you fits. It is perfect for beginners. And the coolest part? You can make this top reversible! It’s like two tops in one. I loved it so much, I made one for both of my girls.

Now, she’s going to flex her hacker muscles just a little. I can’t wait for you to see her adorable little creation on her blog Crazy Crafty Haute Mama… and the pattern turned out really cute too.

I have worked with Melissa with Rebel & Malice a lot in the past. Melissa is insanely talents, so be sure to check out Rebel & Malice to see the hacks that she did on our Adaline Dress & Tunic.

Leggings with Flare, A Wool Jacket, Pintucks Galore – Birthday Blog Tour Day 3

Today is our official birthday!!  Bella Sunshine Designs has officially made it one whole year in business.  I am so thrilled that so many special people have come together to help us celebrate this milestone! Day 1 and Day 2 of the Birthday Blog Tour have brought us lots of inspiration. Let’s get on to see what Day 3 brings us below.

Bella Sunshine Designs Birthday Blog Tour – Day 3

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-Sewing-by-Ti

It’s appropriate that Tibeca from Sewing by Ti chose to hack our Bow Tie Leggings & Shorts since it is the very first pattern that was released a year ago today. She told me that this pattern was one legging to rule them all, and gushed about how wonderfully they fit. See what hacks she did over at her blog, Sewing by Ti.

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-gabriellascoat_madebysara

Sara loves to make clothes for her three kids (two girls, one boy) and for herself. Sewing is a passion for her! For this tour she turned the Gabriella’s Winter Coat into a woolen jacket. It is an easy hack and you can learn all about it over at Made by Sara.

bsdtour7

Candice from Candice Ayala was one of my very first testers. We have since become fast friends gushing about sewing, testing and all things in between. When I found out that she wanted to hack our Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress, I know it was the perfect pattern for her. Check out her blog Candice Ayala to see what she did and how she paired it with a cute pair of Bow Tie Leggings.

It’s day two here on the birthday blog tour.  Did you enjoy seeing what everyone made yesterday? There are so many creative seamstresses out there. Kellly KW 2

First up is Kennis from Itch to Stitch. Kennis is a fellow designer as well as a very good friend of mine. I was flattered when she said she wanted to be on the blog tour.  She did such an amazing job transforming the women’s version of Kelly’s Twirly skirt that it looks like a brand new pattern!  Check out her blog to see how she hacked it.

Fenna from Fabulous Home Sewn is another great fellow patten designer. I love how pattern designers are all so supportive of each other. Fenna sewed up the Gabriella’s Winter Coat. Check out her post to see what changes she made.

BSD-Birthday_Blog-Tour-Sew-Sophie-Lynn
I am sucker for exposed zippers.  They feel fresh and modern to me.  So I was super excited to see that Tami from Sew Sophie Lynn used one on her version of the Adaline Dress & Tunic.  See what other changes she made on her blog.

Bella Sunshine Designs is Turning ONE! – Birthday Blog Tour – Day 1

Birthday Blog Tour 2016-01

Bella Sunshine Designs is Turning 1!

It was a year ago this week that our very first pattern, the Bow Tie Leggings & Shorts was released.  As a pattern designer, I’m a numbers girl. Math is kinda my thing. Let’s look at everything that Bella Sunshine Designs has done since then by the numbers:

  • We’ve released 11 patterns our first year.
  • We’ve written 44 blog posts.
  • Our Facebook Group has grown to over 2,000 members. Can you help us break that barrier today? Join our group if you aren’t already there!
  • Our site sees on average 4,200 site visitors a day (with over 155,000 page views a month).
  • Our average monthly viewers on Pinterest is over 1.5 MILLION.  Yes, that’s 1,500,000+. Be sure to follow us to see all our great pins.

In just a short time period, our business has exploded! That is only because we have such wonderful and loyal customers that have supported us along the way. Because of you guys, we want to celebrate!

What’s a party without friends? That’s why we have 15 bloggers that have all joined together to help us celebrate! We love to show off how versatile our patterns are. It’s amazing to see someone to take out blueprints, get creative and make something great. That’s why the theme of this blog tour is to hack the pattern. Each blogger took their favorite BSD pattern, and changed it someway to make it awesome.

First up today is Pattern Revolution…

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-Pattern-Revolution

Pattern Revolution has always been a big supporter of BSD.  In fact, our second ever released pattern, the Holiday Cutout Dress & Top was featured on their website as part of the AD Challenge. This time Pattern Revolution took FIVE of our patterns and mashed them. Check out their blog to see how the Adaline Dress, the Holiday Cutout Dress, the Rebel Girl Party Dress, Kelly’s Twirly Skirt, and the Bow Tie Leggings all came together to make one great outfit.

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-House-of-Estrella

Next we have Magna from House of Estrela. She hacked our Gabriella’s Winter Coat for her daughter who happens to be named Gabriela (with one “L” only.) Sounds like that pattern was made for her! Check out her post to see what she did!

Our last stop for the day is Heather from Pleats & Ruffles.  She also made up an awesome version of our Gabriella’s Winter Coat.

Itch to Stitch Birthday Tour: The Marbella Dress

I’ll let you in on a little secret… us designers are a tight-knit group!  I never expected that my competitors would be my biggest cheerleaders (ok, maybe besides my mom and my husband).  Kennis Wong of Itch to Stitch is one of my closest designer friends.  Not only is she ridiculously talented at designing perfectly fitting women’s clothing, she is super knowledgeable about all kinds of technical aspects of sewing.  And she’s a pretty amazing person to boot.  When she mentioned to me that her business was having its first birthday, I knew I wanted to support her on this milestone.  And what better way than to help throw her a birthday party on her birthday blog tour! For the blog tour I knew immediately which one of her patterns I wanted to sew.  The fact that the Marbella dress has multiple cup sizes it a huge selling feature to me.  I am a “busty” girl.  Honestly, sometimes I feel like a real life Barbie doll.  I am used to having to do a major bust adjustment on every pattern that I sew for myself.  The Marbella dress comes in A, B, C and D sizes.  While I still had to do a full bust adjustment due to my DDD size (thanks genetics!), it was a much smaller adjustment than I was used to making which meant I only had to do one muslin for fitting.  This is so not normal for me, and I was thrilled that everything fit perfectly with very little adjustments. Kennis asked that we “hack” her pattern in some way and do our own spin on it.  The Marbella dress is so beautiful on its own, that I had a hard time figuring out what to hack.  Ultimately, I decided to alter the neckline from the boatneck included in the pattern to a more traditional scoop neckline.  Here’s how I did it… IMG_4970First I cut out new neckline on the pattern using a curved ruler.  I tried to make the center of the neckline fairly even with the shoulder strap width.  Then I made sure the back was even with the front. After doing a full bust adjustment, I sewed a quick muslin.  Sewing muslins aren’t much fun, but they are so essential if you want to get a nice fit.  All bodies are shaped differently, and I would much rather waste $2 a yard muslin fabric than my hoarded $$ a yard designer prints.  In this case, I’m glad I did a muslin.  While my full bust adjustment was a success (yay!  My boobs fit!), when I altered the neckline, I didn’t remember that with the boatneck design, the shoulder would have to be brought in more.  See that little excess fabric in the neckline?  I would have been sad had I not done a muslin first!  Most of the time when I do a muslin, I don’t finish the edges or anything unless I need to for an accurate fit.  The more experienced you get with fitting, the quicker you can sew a basic muslin to figure out how the fit will be. IMG_4994 Altering the neckline was an easy fix.  I re-taped my pattern piece to a piece of tracing paper, moved the shoulder in a set pre-measured amount, and I was all set.  Now I should have made a new muslin, but since I had measured the amount the shoulder needed to be moved, and because as a designer I am very used to making these types of adjustments often, I went for it with confidence (and the knowledge that I had enough fabric if I made a mistake.) The end result was pretty spectacular: Itch-to-Stitch-Marbella-Dress-004Itch-to-Stitch-Marbella-Dress-005Itch-to-Stitch-Marbella-Dress-006Itch-to-Stitch-Marbella-Dress-003 This is by far the most favorite thing I have ever made myself.  The pictures (taken by my less than enthusiastic that he was forced to stop working our our new house to step behind the camera husband) simply do not do it justice.  I’m a sucker for Lilly Pulitzer dresses due to the fine finishes, and this dress feels like a Lilly (but without the hefty price tag and made with a lot more love).  I love the fact that the dress is fully lined and has POCKETS!  Plus, all the fine techniques like the invisible zipper and under stitching made it a joy to sew.  It’s so nice to sew something that doesn’t feel slopped together.  I want the things that I spend the time to make to last for a long time and to look nice wear after wear.  This dress most certainly will.  But if you’ve ever sewn a Itch to Stitch pattern, you know that Kennis from Itch to Stitch is known for having stellar designs with professional techniques, so there was no surprise that this pattern produces a fabulous dress.  And how about that fabric?? It is Flamingo Border Seafoam from Michael Miller.  The moment I saw it I knew I had to buy it and hoard it for something special.  I love the color. In some lights it looks turquoise and in others its seafoam. It’s impossible to capture the color correctly on film. And the flamingo border is perfect for our sunny South Florida weather. IMG_5066I almost forgot to mention my other secret hack.  One you would never notice on the outside, but makes me want to jump with joy… LACE!  If you’ve looked around here for half a second, you will know that I’m addicted to the stuff.  So when I decided to do a blind hem on the dress, I added a little lace trim on the hem.  Pretty, huh? What’s a birthday party without PRESENTS?!?!  I have to admit, when I heard about the prizes for the giveaway for this blog tour, I was kinda sad I couldn’t win them myself.  Check out the info below on how to enter, and be sure to check out some of the other bloggers and their fabulous creations! Sharing the Designer Love: Seaside Notions

Some sewist may or may not not know this, but the PDF Designer world is very close knit.  I have never before worked in an industry where people were so friendly and helpful with their competitors.  It’s totally awesome to get to be real friends with other people that share your passion of fashion design.  Because of that, I wanna share a little love with my bestie in the PDF world, Nicola of Seaside Notions.

When Nicola asked me to test her new Point Mugu Maxi Skirt pattern, I was stoked!  I love her brand, and it was an honor to get to test together.  When I found out she was putting together a blog tour, I quickly signed up.  I love this pattern, and I couldn’t wait to show it off to my readers.  Plus it gives me the perfect excuse to show off cute photos of my oldest princess sporting her new skirt.  So without further ado, I’d like to present to you the Point Mugu Maxi Skirt:

Isabella-Tester-005 Isabella-Tester-011 Isabella-Tester-013The skirt features an elastic waist band and four tiers with lots of ruffles.  It sews together so easy and fast.  The fit was spot on, and my daughter absolutely loves it.  She always says how pretty she feels when she wears it which melts this momma’s heart!

Isabella-Tester-015 Isabella-Tester-026 Isabella-Tester-031There were several things I loved about this pattern.  First off, let me go a little geeky for a second.  Seaside Notion’s branding is beautiful!  I love when I open up a pattern and it’s pretty.  It makes it a joy to read.  The other thing I love is the fact that the pattern not only has layered pattern pieces, but also a measurement chart.  It’s like the best of both worlds.  Plus it has a very large size range of 12M to 14 which means it will last me a long time.

If you haven’t had a chance to pick up a copy of this pattern, now is a perfect time.  You can get it for 20% off using coupon code blogtour.  Seaside Notions is also giving one lucky person a copy for free!  Use the Rafflecopter below to enter.

Today we have From-a-Box and Lulu & Celeste as our last stop:

www.From-a-Box.com BSD Holiday Cutout Pumpkin Patch Top 1

First up on the Blog Tour is Stacey blogging at From-a-Box.  That’s what her house looks like, a box dropped on a neighborhood lot in the Pacific Northwest.  At the box, She parents 3 kids, works full time, and LOVEs to sew Indie Designer patterns – like the Holiday Cutout Dress by Bella Sunshine Designs!  Because her favorite season is Autumn, she fashioned a Pumpkin-Patch-worthy top from the pattern, complete with a pumpkin cutout in the back and appliquéd pumpkins on the front.  And as an added bonus, the Pumpkin Patch Top puts Stacey 6 months ahead and ready for October already.  Go see the Holiday Cutout Dress here.

Next we have Ula who blogs over at Lulu & Celeste where she shares the clothing and other fun things she sews. She sews mainly for her two girls, “Silly Bean” and “Baby V”, who are fun to sew for since they don’t take up a lot of fabric! She’s even written a couple tutorials for small crafts and has a few more in the works. You can see more here.

That’s a wrap!  It’s been so much fun seeing what everyone has come up with using the Holiday Cutout Dress & Top PDF Sewing Pattern.  Just to recap, here are the great bloggers that we’ve seen along with their posts.
