New Releases, Winter Coats, & Beautiful Dresses – Birthday Blog Tour – Day 5

It’s Friday!  You know what that means?!?!  It’s release day here at BSD!  In addition to 3 more fabulous pattern hacks, we’ve got two great pattern releases for you today!  No matter if you are in love with woven fabrics or knits, we’ve got something for everyone.

The Maci Twirly Dress & Top – Girls PDF Sewing Pattern

You are going to love the Maci Twirly Dress & Top.  It comes with both long and short sleeves as well as three different length options.  It is designed for knit fabrics for all you custom knit addicts out there. This has quickly become my daughter’s favorite play dress.  And it’s such a quick sew, I don’t mind that she goes out and gets dirty in it.  She’s begging me to make her more. Check out the photos below:

To see all the tester photos, check out the listing in our shop.

The Piper Reversible Peplum Top – Girls PDF Sewing Pattern

I love the look of a peplum top. It accentuates the waist and gives such a feminine look to the figure.  I wanted this top to be super beginner friendly.  Because of that, there are no zippers or button holes to sew. The back keyhole is both decorative and functional allowing the top to slip easily over the head. And since there is a button loop to close, you don’t have to worry about your machine button hole giving you fits. It is perfect for beginners. And the coolest part? You can make this top reversible! It’s like two tops in one. I loved it so much, I made one for both of my girls.

Now that you’ve seen the new releases, let’s get on to the the rest of the blog tour!

BSD-Birthfay-Blog-Tour-Adventures-Bubbe-Bug

Essence with Adventures With Bubbe and Bug is a favorite tester of mine. When she signed up to hack the Coffee Shop Lace Dress, I knew it was going to be amazing. Check out her blog Adventures With Bubbe and Bug to see how she changes my favorite lace trimmed dress.

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-Crazy-Crafty-Haute-Mama

Tara from Crazy Crafty Haute Mama fell in love with the a-DOR-able Gabriella’s Winter Coat and snapped it up despite having at least 5 other coat patterns in her repertoire. Now, she’s going to flex her hacker muscles just a little. I can’t wait for you to see her adorable little creation on her blog Crazy Crafty Haute Mama… and the pattern turned out really cute too.

bsd adaline preview

I have worked with Melissa with Rebel & Malice a lot in the past. Not only was she one of my very first testers, she inspired our Rebel Girl Party Dress (which I should mention you will be seeing the women’s version of that popular pattern release next month!) Melissa is insanely talents, so be sure to check out Rebel & Malice to see the hacks that she did on our Adaline Dress & Tunic.

Leggings with Flare, A Wool Jacket, Pintucks Galore – Birthday Blog Tour Day 3

Today is our official birthday!!  Bella Sunshine Designs has officially made it one whole year in business.  I am so thrilled that so many special people have come together to help us celebrate this milestone! Day 1 and Day 2 of the Birthday Blog Tour have brought us lots of inspiration. Let’s get on to see what Day 3 brings us below.

Bella Sunshine Designs Birthday Blog Tour – Day 3

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-Sewing-by-Ti

It’s appropriate that Tibeca from Sewing by Ti chose to hack our Bow Tie Leggings & Shorts since it is the very first pattern that was released a year ago today. She told me that this pattern was one legging to rule them all, and gushed about how wonderfully they fit. See what hacks she did over at her blog, Sewing by Ti.

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-gabriellascoat_madebysara

Sara loves to make clothes for her three kids (two girls, one boy) and for herself. Sewing is a passion for her! For this tour she turned the Gabriella’s Winter Coat into a woolen jacket. It is an easy hack and you can learn all about it over at Made by Sara.

bsdtour7

Candice from Candice Ayala was one of my very first testers. We have since become fast friends gushing about sewing, testing and all things in between. When I found out that she wanted to hack our Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress, I know it was the perfect pattern for her. Check out her blog Candice Ayala to see what she did and how she paired it with a cute pair of Bow Tie Leggings.

Now let’s win some prizes!

A Warm Coat, Bubble Skirt & Exposed Zipper – Birthday Blog Tour – Day 2

It’s day two here on the birthday blog tour.  Did you enjoy seeing what everyone made yesterday? There are so many creative seamstresses out there. It’s so exciting seeing what everyone comes up with. I love seeing someone take a pattern and putting a creative spin on it. Today is no different. Get ready to be inspired.

Bella Sunshine Designs Birthday Blog Tour – Day 2

Kellly KW 2

First up is Kennis from Itch to Stitch. Kennis is a fellow designer as well as a very good friend of mine. I was flattered when she said she wanted to be on the blog tour.  She did such an amazing job transforming the women’s version of Kelly’s Twirly skirt that it looks like a brand new pattern!  Check out her blog to see how she hacked it.

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-Fabulous-Home_Sewn
Fenna from Fabulous Home Sewn is another great fellow patten designer. I love how pattern designers are all so supportive of each other. Fenna sewed up the Gabriella’s Winter Coat. Check out her post to see what changes she made.

BSD-Birthday_Blog-Tour-Sew-Sophie-Lynn
I am sucker for exposed zippers.  They feel fresh and modern to me.  So I was super excited to see that Tami from Sew Sophie Lynn used one on her version of the Adaline Dress & Tunic.  See what other changes she made on her blog.

Bella Sunshine Designs is Turning ONE! – Birthday Blog Tour – Day 1

Birthday Blog Tour 2016-01

Bella Sunshine Designs is Turning 1!

It was a year ago this week that our very first pattern, the Bow Tie Leggings & Shorts was released.  As a pattern designer, I’m a numbers girl. Math is kinda my thing. Let’s look at everything that Bella Sunshine Designs has done since then by the numbers:

  • We’ve released 11 patterns our first year.
  • We’ve written 44 blog posts.
  • Our Facebook Group has grown to over 2,000 members. Can you help us break that barrier today? Join our group if you aren’t already there!
  • Our site sees on average 4,200 site visitors a day (with over 155,000 page views a month).
  • Our average monthly viewers on Pinterest is over 1.5 MILLION.  Yes, that’s 1,500,000+. Be sure to follow us to see all our great pins.

In just a short time period, our business has exploded! That is only because we have such wonderful and loyal customers that have supported us along the way. Because of you guys, we want to celebrate!

What’s a party without friends? That’s why we have 15 bloggers that have all joined together to help us celebrate! We love to show off how versatile our patterns are. It’s amazing to see someone to take out blueprints, get creative and make something great. That’s why the theme of this blog tour is to hack the pattern. Each blogger took their favorite BSD pattern, and changed it someway to make it awesome.

First up today is Pattern Revolution…

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-Pattern-Revolution

Pattern Revolution has always been a big supporter of BSD.  In fact, our second ever released pattern, the Holiday Cutout Dress & Top was featured on their website as part of the AD Challenge. This time Pattern Revolution took FIVE of our patterns and mashed them. Check out their blog to see how the Adaline Dress, the Holiday Cutout Dress, the Rebel Girl Party Dress, Kelly’s Twirly Skirt, and the Bow Tie Leggings all came together to make one great outfit.

BSD-Birthday-Blog-Tour-House-of-Estrella

Next we have Magna from House of Estrela. She hacked our Gabriella’s Winter Coat for her daughter who happens to be named Gabriela (with one “L” only.) Sounds like that pattern was made for her! Check out her post to see what she did!

IMG_8497e

Our last stop for the day is Heather from Pleats & Ruffles.  She also made up an awesome version of our Gabriella’s Winter Coat.

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand - Man I can relate to a lot of these since I started sewing!

I never realized it, but apparently us creative types think differently than the rest of the world. For some reason I cannot understand, the rest of the world doesn’t get excited over $2 a yard fleece fabric or finding the perfect buttons for the dress you are making. This sparked a thought… what other things can only a seamstress understand?

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand - Man I can relate to a lot of these since I started sewing!

1. The fear of someone else using your sewing scissors for something other than fabric.

You know that panic you get when you see your husband use your prized Gingher sewing scissors
to cut the tag off his new shirt? Its the feeling you have right before you think of all the different ways you might retaliate for this horrendous offence.

2. The problem of having thread, EVERYWHERE!

You stand in line at the grocery store. You happen to glance down at your shirt and realize that your shirt looks like it was attached by a thread spool.  Apparently this is a problem that only happens to seamstresses.

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand - Man I can relate to a lot of these since I started sewing!

3. The feeling of pure satisfaction when you finish your project right before the bobbin runs out.

You won. You showed that bobbin thread who was boss!

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand - Man I can relate to a lot of these since I started sewing!

4. The love hate relationship you have with your seam ripper.

Your dear, beloved seam ripper.  She is there for you in your time of need, but you wish you didn’t need her quite so often.

5. The feeling of pride when a complete stranger says they like something you’ve made.

Who is amazing?  YOU are amazing!

6. The feeling of elation when you tell that complete stranger that you made the item they are ogling over.

Not only do you know that you are amazing, now THEY know that you’re amazing.  Just give them a few moments to pick their jaw off the floor so they can bask in your amazingness.

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand - Man I can relate to a lot of these since I started sewing!

7. The joy of getting a new sewing machine/serger/sewing tool.

You’ve been drooling over it forever! And now it’s here!  Yippee!!

8. Feeling like a little kid at Christmas when that custom fabric you ordered finally shows up in the mail.

Because you only ordered it what feels like 5 million years ago. Now to wash it and fold it up all pretty so you can stare at it on your fabric stash until you finally get brave enough to cut into it (which by the way, that may never happen.)

9. The annoyance when you see something sold in the stores that was made in china and the stripes don’t match.

Ugh. How can anyone not be annoyed by that?

10 Things Only a Seamstress Can Understand - Man I can relate to a lot of these since I started sewing!

10. The confidence that you get when you make your stripes (or pattern) match.

That’s because you can sew like a boss!

Did I forget one?? What else are thoughts that only seamstresses have? Let me know in the comments and your response might make a future list!

Sell Clothes on Etsy: Featured Boutique Lindley Lou’s & GIVEAWAY

We started this series a couple weeks ago and it was a hit, so we are doing it again! I know a lot of seamstresses are interested in selling clothes on Etsy, but they aren’t quite sure how to go about it. The best way to find out more is to talk to other shop owners.

This week we have Lindley of Lindley Lou’s boutique.  I was so excited to sit down with her and learn more about her shop as well as get a few tips she might have for other shop owners. Lindley’s style is full of fresh colors and lace details. Learn more about her boutique below:

Sell Clothes on Etsy

What is your Shop Name: Lindley Lou’s

What is Your Shop Link? https://www.etsy.com/shop/LindleyLous

How Long Have You Been Selling on Etsy: I began selling handmade bows in 2010, so almost 6 years!
What is Your Best Selling Item: My best selling item has to be custom nursery sets.

What is Your Favorite Thing to Make for Etsy: Oh gosh, that’s a hard one! I have too many favorites! The Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress is one that is so beautiful and timeless, that one is one of my absolute favorites!

What is your Best Tip for someone wanting to get started selling on Etsy: Find what you love to make and stick with it! You will be amazed at how much your craftsmanship can grow in a short amount of time.

Sell Clothes on Etsy

Tell Me Your Funniest Etsy Story: In the beginning, Etsy didn’t have these neat options for sizes and colors. I listed a car seat cover and at the bottom of the listing I asked the buyer to specify what print in the note to seller area upon checkout. She requested the, “damask print.” It was a local order and I met the lady to give her a sweet damask car seat cover set. As I explained how to put it on the car seat and handed her the bag she asked, “this is cute… But, what is this?” While handing her bag back to me. I panicked!! I could feel my face turning red thinking I had met the wrong customer in our local Target parking lot! As it turns out, I had pictures of TWO different damask prints in my listing and I did not realize. She wanted one print and I made the other. Thankfully, she was very sweet about it and allowed me to meet up with her the next day with the correct damask print.

Tell Me One of Your Favorite Customer Stories: I love to see my items being worn or displayed in a nursery. It makes me happy to know the items I have created are liked by my customers! To have that reassurance by getting a great Etsy review or a tag on Facebook, it’s great! It really makes this momma happy!

What is your most Challenging Thing About Running an Easy Shop? My most challenging thing would have to be time management. My husband and I are renovating our home and I have had to move my sewing room upstairs, then downstairs (to be closer to our little ones), and we have just talked about possibly moving everything back upstairs to renovate my current sewing space. Between three kids ages 4, 2, and 1 I can still find time to make it work and do what I love.

To do what you love and get paid for it?  Thanks so much to Lindley for sharing her boutique with us.  If you want to open your own store on Etsy, you can sign up through this link and get 40 free shop listings.

DIY Tutorial: How to Make a Short Sleeve Shirt into a Long Sleeve Shirt

I’m a clearance shopper. I always love finding a good deal especially when it comes to kids clothes. They seem to outgrow them so fast that it doesn’t make sense to spend a lot on an everyday item. The bad thing about shopping clearance clothing is that you are normally shopping in the wrong season. While Florida doesn’t get super cold, we do have a few cool days here and there. I found this plain black shirt around the holidays for only $2! It had a cute bow and was in my daughter’s size, but it was short sleeve. I don’t normally dress my daughter in black in the summer time because our summers here are super hot. So what is a seamstress to do? Make that short sleeve shirt long sleeve of course!

I made this shirt before our annual trip to Buffalo, NY. It’s super cold there in January, and my oldest was seriously lacking in the winter wear department. I had made her some Bow Tie Leggings out of this pink polka dot knit I had in my stash, and decided she needed a shirt to go with it. Adding the sleeves made this a perfect DIY hack and it coordinated perfectly with the leggings.

First thing I needed to do is to determine what size to make the sleeve. The only way to do that was to first measure the shirt sleeve. I measured it flat, doubled the measurement and then added my seam allowances.DIY Tutorial: How to Make a Short Sleeve Shirt Long Sleeve - Great for those short sleeve shirts I got on sale!

Next, I put the shirt on my daughter and measured from the bottom of the sleeve to where I wanted to sleeve to fall. Again, remember to not only add the seam allowance on the top, but the hem allowance at the bottom.

Then I cut out my sleeves! You can do this with a rotary cutter and a mat or just with a pair of scissors. (I use the Fiskars Rotary Cutting Set I found on Amazon.)

Next, I angled the bottom of the sleeves so they would have a slight taper to them. You can take them in as much as you would like, I choose to mark off just over an inch at the bottom and then draw a straight line to the top.

Now trim those sides you just marked. Be sure you are doing this to both sleeves and using the same measurements!

Turn the new sleeve right side out and pin the raw edge inside the finished short sleeve. Since knit doesn’t fray, there is no need to finish or fold the raw edges unless you just want to. I aligned the raw edge of the sleeve to hit the inside edge of the sleeve hem.

Now it’s time to attach your sleeve. I sewed directly on top of the coverstitch that is closest to the bottom of the hem. It was important to me that the shirt looked as close to ready to wear as possible, so the easiest way was to carefully stitch directly over the original stitching line. Again, be sure to use a stretch stitch here so your stitches will stretch naturally with the fabric.DIY Tutorial: How to Make a Short Sleeve Shirt Long Sleeve - Great for those short sleeve shirts I got on sale!
Now all you have left to do is hem the sleeves! I folded over the hem twice…

And stitched the hem with a stretch stitch.

And you are done! Easy peasy. And now you have a shirt that was inexpensive and is perfect for cooler weather.

I decided that this shirt still needed a little something, so I added this really cool castle design along with my daughter’s name using my embroidery machine. You can find the castle file through Lynnie Pennie.
