How to Blend Sizes: The Key to the Perfect Fit

The first step we discussed in last week’s post which is to take accurate measurements.  Today I want to  continue on to the second part of our two-part series on The Key to the Perfect Fit and talk about how to blend sizes.  If you are like most people I know, your little one does not fit the standard size.  Just like adults, kids come in all different shapes in sizes.  Some are short, some are tall.  Wherever they lie on the growth chart, you can accommodate by blending from one size to another.  While this sounds super difficult, it actually is rather easy as long as you know where and how to adjust.  Most of the newer BSD patterns include instructions for how to blend right in the pattern so you know exactly how to get your custom fit.  And that’s the benefit of sewing over ready to wear right?  It means you can make a custom garment tailored perfectly to your little one.

So that’s how to blend sizes to get your perfect fit.  Easy huh?  As always, be sure to subscribe to my youtube channel for more great videos.

UPDATE: I’ve had a few people email me and ask what they should trace their new sizes on.  While you can always just used the computer paper that is taped together, I prefer to use tracing paper when I blend sizes and create a new pattern piece.  You can find where to buy it here.

How to Measure: The Key to the Perfect Fit

Happy Friday!  Who is excited for the weekend?!?!  I spent all day yesterday thinking that it was Friday, so I am SO ready for the weekend. I’m going to start out today with a two-part blog series that I think will help out both new and experienced sewists.

I see a lot of people having fit issues on the sewing boards.  Most of the time the issues can be categorized into two main categories: not measuring properly, and not blending sizes to get that customized fit.  While sometimes the pattern is also to blame, most of the time it’s because of one of the above mentioned issues.  So what better reason for a blog post?  And I have an even better special treat for you today.  My very first video!  When my hubby decided he wanted a GoPro, I quickly stole borrowed it so that I could add some amazing content for you guys.  And since it’s near impossible to illustrate how to measure properly in photos, I figured now was a perfect time to get behind the camera and show you!

Without further ado, check it out!

This video was brought to you by my southern accent, crazy children, and cluttered sewing room.  Hope you enjoyed it!  Be sure to subscribe to our new YouTube channel.  Did you learn anything new?  Let me know in the comments!

Why today is a big day. I never thought this would ever be possible.

Today is a huge day, you guys.  Maybe not on the BSD side (ok not completely true), but definitely on the personal side of my life.  Today at 3:30pm, my husband and I are buying a piece of land to build our forever home on!  The word excited doesn’t even begin to describe what I’m feeling.  This has been a dream of ours since we started dating, and an active goal we’ve been moving towards for over a year now.  So to officially finalize the first part of that process feels surreal.  It really is a dream come true.

I think one of the things I’m most eager about is that in our new home we have plans for an incredible workspace for BSD.  Plans that will that include a real office which seems amazing considering that I am currently typing away in my living room with Disney Junior blaring in the background and a pair of little feet begging me for her fourth round of breakfast as I try to make a coherent thought. Also in the plans is a GIANT sewing room.  Really, it’s more like a sewing loft.  Ok, maybe even a sewing FLOOR!  Can’t you just imagine what you would do with all that room?  I mean, isn’t it obvious?  Buy more fabric!

I know I keep saying this, but there are so many secret things in the works in the background right now that I can’t hardly contain myself.  Buying our property is the first crucial step to that entire process.  I’m sure I will be blogging a lot throughout the process, and I hope not to bore you with all my home construction excitement.  Until then, I leave you with this picture of Isabella and I on our new land.

Why today is a big day. I never thought this would ever be possible.

And another unrelated note (I’m full of random thoughts today,) I plan on actually doing a lot more blogging in the future.  I have a lot of great content written up for you guys, so be sure to check the blog often so you don’t miss anything.

Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress & Tunic - PDF Sewing Pattern by Bella Sunshine Designs for sizes 6m through girls 12 - What a beautiful, vintage inspired pattern! I am in love with the pin tucked bodice and the ruffles! My sweet girl needs this dress! Pinning for later!

NEW RELEASE: the Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress & Tunic

I am so inspired by vintage designs.  I’ve always said my work is a modern take on classic design.  Something about lace trim, small pin tucks, and button details really makes my heart sing.  I know I say this every time, but I think my newest release is by far the most beautiful thing I have ever designed.  It has an heirloom feel to it although I’m not sure if it is worthy enough to have that title.  Either way, the beauty of it takes my breath away.

I needed a little help naming this pattern, so I ran a contest in the Bella Sunshine Designs Facebook group to get naming ideas.  Over 200 suggestions later and Nanda submitted the perfect name: the Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress.  Now I have to admit I’m a little embarrassed that I didn’t think of this myself.  I, myself, have a sweet Lilly.  My youngest daughter is the epitome of sweetness.  Her baby soft skin and super blonde hair along with her smile that lights up the room just makes my heart melt.  The name felt perfect for this dress.  And since this is the first pattern that I have released that has gone down to a size small enough for my baby girl to wear, the name was very fitting.  So without further ado, I give you the Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress & Tunic modeled by my beautiful daughters:

The Sweet Lilly Pintuck Dress & Tunic  comes in sizes 6 months to Girls 12 and features a pin tucked bodice that has button and ruffle details on the bodice and sleeves.  The ruffles on the skirt tie it all together and give the skirt as much care and attention to detail as the bodice has.  The pattern features two dress lengths: a short baby doll length that is perfect as a super short dress or as a longer tunic with leggings, and a longer more traditional dress length for a more conservative option.  All the gorgeous detailing makes it something that you are sure to pass down for generations. If you aren’t convinced of the amazing details of this dress, check out some of my favorite tester photos below (photo overload warning!!)
